BBQ Fundraiser at Sobeys a Great Lunch Treat For All
Unbelievable support from community far and wide helps raise over $2,200 providing lunch of freshly grilled burgers, dogs and ice cold pop at Sobeys in Gravenhurst.
“Don’t make lunch, come have us make it for you,” a member of the Gravenhurst Rotary club called out to cottagers and residents alike as they pulled up to Sobeys to grab weekend groceries. On Friday, August 22, the Rotary Club of Gravenhurst popped up some tents and fired up the grill for a charity BBQ held in support of the Gravenhurst Health Hub. Held just off HWY 11 at the Sobeys location in Gravenhurst, this event was a resounding success, raising an impressive $2,200 for the Gravenhurst Health Hub project. The event brought together community members who were eager to contribute to a cause that directly impacts the availability and quality of health services in Gravenhurst. With delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere, the BBQ not only offered attendees a quick and enjoyable lunch but also fostered a spirit of generosity and concern for community well-being.
Of particular fun was the option to be the “Parking Lot DJ.” For donations of $25 or more, you could choose a song for all to enjoy. Some of the requested songs included some Beatles and Elvis classics, “Doctor, Doctor,” from Robert Palmer, some Lady Gaga and some young boys had fun “Rick Rolling,” everybody within earshot with the Rick Astley, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Nice one boys, you got us good. 😏
A key focus of the event was to spread awareness about the critical health care crisis facing Gravenhurst permanent and seasonal residents. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about the growing challenges in accessing timely and effective health services, including the fact that nearly 5 in every 10 Gravenhurst resident lacks access to primary healthcare within their town. The team got a chance to meet new residents who had just moved here and were fearful of un-attaching from their primary health care physician, leaving them driving up to 4 hours in some cases to go visit their doctors.
Beyond raising funds, the BBQ served as a platform for community engagement and education, giving seasonal residents and those just passing through an opportunity to talk about the health care crisis in general in Ontario. The team was able to answer questions about challenges encountered right now by all citizens looking for health care, enabling informed advocacy and support.
Overall, the charity BBQ was more than just a fundraising occasion; it was a celebration of community spirit and a call to action. The $2,200 raised will contribute significantly toward the fundraising goals for the Gravenhurst Health Hub project and supporting the ongoing efforts of bringing more primary health care services to Gravenhurst. The event’s success highlights the community’s commitment to ensuring accessible, quality health care for Gravenhurst.
A huge thanks to Sobeys, community advocates for good, for hosting the group.
