Health Tip for October

Ontario launches fall immunization programs starting with high-risk and priority groups, then children.

The Ontario government is rolling out its fall immunization strategy to protect families and vulnerable populations from respiratory illnesses, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Residents are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as doses become available. The initiative is part of Ontario’s broader health plan, “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care,” which aims to ensure timely access to essential health services.

Immunizations will be distributed in phases, beginning with high-risk and priority groups. COVID-19 vaccines will be available starting the week of September 22, followed by flu vaccines the week of September 29. RSV vaccines will also be offered to eligible seniors aged 60 and older, and those in higher-risk settings. Starting October 1, infants and young children at risk for RSV, as well as pregnant women, will be eligible for targeted immunizations to protect newborns.

By October 27, flu and COVID-19 vaccines will be available to the general public through pharmacies, public health units, and participating medical offices. All vaccines in Ontario’s routine immunization schedule are free for those who meet eligibility criteria. Health officials urge residents to stay up-to-date on seasonal vaccines to safeguard themselves and their communities during respiratory illness season.

📅 Immunization Rollout Dates

Week of Sept 22: COVID-19 vaccines available for high-risk groups

Week of Sept 22: RSV vaccines available for eligible seniors (60–74 high-risk, 75+)

Week of Sept 29: Flu vaccines available for high-risk groups

October 1: RSV immunizations begin for infants, young children, and pregnant women

October 27: Flu and COVID-19 vaccines available to the general public

As recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), individuals should receive the most recent formulation of the COVID-19 vaccine in the fall as it is expected to provide a better immune response against currently circulating COVID-19 strains.

The vaccination programs offered through our government are helping seniors to stay active, healthy and socially connected in our communities. I encourage all seniors to protect themselves by utilizing the available programs: stay safe and stay vaccinated!
— Raymond Cho, Minister of Seniors and Accessibility
The Ontario Pharmacists Association is pleased to see the province’s continued commitment to supporting local communities through pharmacy. Pharmacy professionals across Ontario are proud to support another respiratory illness season—delivering flu and COVID-19 vaccines to ensure all Ontarians have timely access to care that keeps them healthy and safe.
— Justin Bates CEO, Ontario Pharmacists Association
As respiratory viruses circulate this fall, vaccination is our strongest defense. We encourage all Ontarians, especially seniors and others at higher risk of complications from infection, to get their seasonal vaccines as soon as they’re available. If you’re unsure about timing or eligibility, your family physician can help you make a plan and find convenient options close to home. Getting protected now lowers the risk of severe illness and helps keep people healthier in their communities and out of hospitals.
